Introduction to Interactive Fiction

Defying Will
In this short research paper, I explore the space of interactive fiction - stories where the reader makes decisions - and share the strength of its use. Readers of interactive fiction, also called players, have a unique position where they can change the direction the story takes. These changes can come as small differences between players, or drastic alternatives to endings. Though I already had some initial experience with interactive fiction, I found through my research that there is a lot more that can be created by expanding on the interactive part instead of focusing on the fiction. Players are more likely to stay engaged and immersed when they believe there are real stakes to their decisions. Defying Will is an interactive fiction in its demo stages that showcases how a player can purposefully interact with a story, and it responds to them.
